In January of this year, the new premises of the Honorary Consulate of Belgium were opened in Southampton, making it the 7th Belgian Consulate in the UK. Siddhartha Kunti will also carry responsibility for Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight.
Due to the current circumstances surrounding Brexit and the lack of solid information, the Embassy is not in a position to make any recommendations when it comes to procedures to follow in order to obtain the right to stay. Even though the Home Office has not communicated all the details regarding the stay of citizens from EU member states, it would from now on be prudent to keep any documents proving residency in the United Kingdom. Those documents could then be presented to the Home Office if requested.
Dr Anne Samson is an independent historian specialised in the First World War in Africa. She grew up in South Africa where she obtained her BA Degree and relocated to London in 1996 where she completed her MA in Twentieth Century History and her PhD.
In 2014, Anne started a publishing company working in partnership with authors, TSL Publications. Alongside this, she undertakes research in both the UK and South Africa and promotes the role and significance of Africa in World War 1. She runs the Great War in Africa Association.
Hélène De Witte is a former merchandiser for high-end fashion and interiors brands Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren and Burberry. She retrained as a landscape and garden designer with the London College of Garden Design and qualified in 2014. She is currently living with her family in West London.
The Embassy was represented at the inauguration dinner last month in London of Countess Mountbatten of Burma as patron of the Countess Mountbatten Own Legion of Frontiersmen of the Commonwealth. The Frontiersmen were among the first Britons to go into battle against Germany in 1914 by joining the Belgian army.

Professor Bart De Strooper is a world-renowned researcher in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease who has focused on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that underlie these neurodegenerative disorders. He is the recipient of several prestigious prizes in recognition of his work. Since December 2016, Professor De Strooper is Director of the national UK Dementia Research Institute, based at the institute’s hub at University College London.
Following the German invasion and cease-fire in Belgium in May 1940, several Belgian Squadrons were stationed in France where they fought alongside the French. When France capitulated a month later, the Belgian military were instructed to return to occupied Belgium. However, several pilots refused to obey orders and escaped to the UK. Between the British Government and the Belgian Embassy in London it was agreed that all flying personnel would be integrated into the RAF. Consequently, 30 Belgian pilots participated in the Battle of Britain in September 1940 of whom 8 were killed.
