National day celebrations
Date:25 July 2013
This year’s 21 July celebrations in Brussels took on extra dimensions with the abdication of H.M. King Albert II following a 20-year reign and the swearing in of his son Philippe as seventh King of the Belgians.
At 1pm, King Philippe, Queen Mathilde and the other members of the Royal Family greeted the people from the balcony of the Royal Palace in Laeken.
Afterwards, the new King paid tribute to the Unknown Soldier at the Congress Column and later in the afternoon he reviewed the civil and military troops ahead of their yearly parade on the Place des Palais.
In the evening, the Royal Couple attended celebrations in the Parc de Bruxelles
The eventful day came to a close with a fireworks display on the Place des Palais.
