Academic networking event
Date:28 June 2013
On 25 June, some 30 Belgian academics based at various universities in the UK gathered at the Residence of the Belgian Ambassador in London for the fourth time since the launch of this initiative in academic diplomacy in 2010.
Ambassador Johan Verbeke welcomed three keynote speakers. Professor Stefan Collini from the University of Cambridge reflected on his recent publication ‘What are Universities for?’. Former Minister for Research and Innovation and current member of the Flemish Parliament Fientje Moerman discussed the challenges of higher education in Flanders and Belgium. Finally Professor Ludo Melis, Vice-Rector for Education at the KU Leuven, shared his thoughts on academic research and teaching from the university’s management perspective.
The speeches were followed by a lively Q&A session. Topics such as the pros and cons of research assessment and the differences between research and education in Belgium and the UK were discussed. A dinner during which guests had the opportunity for further networking, closed the event.
