You can drive in Great Britain on your valid Belgian driving licence. This applies to both paper model and bank card model licences. You can drive on your Belgian licence until you turn 70. More information can be found on the website of the British government.
The same rules apply to driving in Northern Ireland.
Please note: all Belgian paper driving licences must be exchanged for a bank card model licence by 2033. To learn more, please visit the Dutch website or the French website of FPS Mobility and Transport.
If you need to apply for a new driving license due to loss, theft or expiry of your previous licence:
- You can apply for a new Belgian driving licence from the last municipality where you were registered in Belgium. You must be registered with the embassy and you will need a valid Belgian identity card. Each town hall will have their own processes, so it is best to consult their website and get in touch with them directly.
- You can exchange your Belgian licence for a British licence. You do not have to retake your test to do so. You should apply directly to the DVLA. You will first need a ‘certification of a Belgian driving license’, which you can request by contacting FPS Mobility and Transport by email: info@mobilit.fgov.be
The embassy does not have any powers to issue driving licences.
